Maharashtra Minister for Cooperation and Marketing Subhash Deshmukh today said that the government wanted to give maximum benefits to both farmers and buyers by minimising the role of middlemen. He claimed such a situation would also reduce farmer suicides.

The minister was speaking at the inauguration of the 11th weekly market in Thane today where he appealed to consumers to buy farm produce directly from such markets in order to improve the livelihood of farmers.

Deshmukh said that the prices of farm produce shot up during its journey from the cultivator to the consumer because of various intermediaries.

Informing that there were 135 such markets already in place, Deshmukh said more markets would be set up across the state.
