A total of 35 cases have been registered in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district in connection with the communal clashes that erupted after the stone-pelting incident between two groups at Karaya near here on January 16, DK Superintendent of Police K S Sharanappa has said.

In a release here, he said 26 persons had been arrested so far and they were produced before the court and remanded. Three police teams had been formed to book the culprits who were absconding.

The call for a bandh today in Uppinangadi, where shops were set on fire by miscreants during the clashes, was called off after a peace meeting was held there yesterday, Sharanappa said. Religious leaders from both communities took part in the meeting, he said.

The police have requested the people not to pay heed to rumours spreading through social media.
