The Central Railway is working on several infrastructural projects to give fillip to passenger safety and amenities, a senior Railway official said today.

At present, he said for suburban services, the major two concerns were--punctuality and daily causalities.

"To meet these demands, we have increased the number of daily services and we are still doing it. CR has undertaken several projects related to infrastructural development and passenger safety. We are confident that when these projects are implemented or commissioned, major problems would be addressed," CR General Manager Akhil Agrawal said today.

He said his department was primarily focusing on improving punctuality and arrest train-related casualties.

Over 10 people die everyday while as many people get injured either by from falling from running trains or trespassing or other various reasons.

A large number of 25,722 passengers fell from suburban trains (on Western, Central and Harbour suburban services in Mumbai Commissionerate) in the last 10 years, of whom 6,989 died while 18,733 survived, an RTI query had found.

"50 to 55 per cent death cases take place due to trespassing, 8 at stations or in the mid-sections, while 25 per cent happen due to falling from running trains. But we have taken serious initiatives to check these untoward causalities and we have positive results of it," he said.

Agrawal said the number of deaths and injuries have come down marginally in the first eight months of this year as compared to the same period a year ago.

To a query, he said, "CR is expediting the process of installing CCTV surveillance cameras, especially in women coaches from the Nirbhaya Fund.
