Customs seizes 2-kg gold worth Rs 59 lakh at Chennai airport

Customs officials seized 2-kg gold bars worth Rs 59 lakh from a passenger who arrived here from Trivandrum today.

Acting on a specific input that 33-year-old K U Irshad hailing from Kerala was carrying gold, the officials at the Anna International Airport here searched him and seized gold bars that were concealed in his shoes, an official release said.

The gold bars weighed two kilograms and were valued at Rs 59 lakh, the release said.

Initial investigations revealed that he was asked to carry the gold by a passenger who was travelling with him in the flight for which Irshad was offered Rs 15,000, the release said.
 

Irshad arrived in an Air India flight which was operated on international route from Sharjah to Trivandrum and domestic route from Trivandrum to Chennai.

Upon his arrival, Irshad was asked to meet a person outside to hand over the gold.
