With the arrest of a youth from Uttar Pradesh, the Cuttack city police today claimed to have cracked a cyber crime involving economic offence.

Cash of over Rs 2 lakh, several fake ATM cards, PAN cards, Press cards, voter identity cards and Aaadhaar cards were seized from Md. Gafur alias Gafur Malik alias Sonu Malik, who was arrested yesterday in Ghaziabad, the police said.

The 25-year-old Gafur was brought here from Uttar Pradesh and was produced before a court in Cuttack city yesterday. He was remanded in judicial custody and was sent to Choudwar jail.

The Cantonment police here last month received a complaint from a cash dispensing agency that manages several ATM kiosks in the city, alleging that about Rs 1.7 lakh cash was missing from several ATMs of the city on February 5 evening during a short interruption of power supply.

Investigating into the case after examining the CCTV footages and bank transactions, the city police zeroed in on one Md Gafur of Ghaziabad district in western UP.

"During interrogation, we came to know that the accused had earlier worked as ATM operator and looted several ATMs in different cities of Odisha and UP", said Cantonment police station, Inspector Biswajit Mohanty.
