A local court today sentenced a driver to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl last year here.
Mahila Court Judge N Thirunavukkarasu sentenced Kannan of Namakkal district to life for raping the girl and ordered the state government to grant Rs one lakh to her as ex-gratia.
The prosecution case was that Kannan (23) of Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district used to often visit the Kalingarayan canal area where he befriended a 16-year-old girl and fell in love with her.
On March 4, 2015, he had met her near the canal and promised to marry her.
Later, he took the girl to a few places where he allegedly raped her several times.
She became pregnant and informed Kannan, who gave her some tablets to abort the pregnancy.
Subsequently, she developed pain and apprised her parents of the incident.
They lodged a complaint with police, following which Kannan was arrested.
