Eight injured in post-panchayat poll clash

A total eight persons, including four from ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) were injured in post-panchayat poll clashes in East Midnapur district today.

Police said four persons were injured in a clash at Muhammadpur in Nandigram area last night following hot exchange of words between TMC and Congress supporters over voting in panchayat elections in the district.

One TMC worker and three Congress workers were injured in the clash, including one seriously.

The Congress workers were being treated at Tamluk sadar hospital, police said adding the seriously injured one was found to have sustained deep wounds inflicted by a sharp weapon.
 

Another four persons, two each of TMC and CPI(M) were injured in a clash at Netajinagar here.

Police said the two TMC workers are being treated at Tamluk hospital, while the CPI-M workers were released after providing first aid.

Police have been deployed in the area to control the situation.

Panchayat polls in East Midnapore were held in the second phase on July 15.
