A 45-year-old fisherman, who was fishing in River Matla in the Sunderbans along with four of his mates, was killed by a tiger, a Forest official said today.

Sisir Biswas, a resident of Jharkhali area in the Sunderbans, was catching fish along with his fellow fishermen in Herobhanga creek of the River Matla last evening when the tiger pounced on him from behind and dragged him inside the jungle, a forest officer said.

His companions chased the tiger which left Biswas and disappeared into the forest, the officer said, adding that by the time the fishermen recovered the body, Biswas had died.

The fishermen brought Biswas' body home and informed officials of the Basanti police station.

The police has sent the body for post-mortem.
