Two group D workers were temporarily suspended after families of two newborns at an ESI hospital here complained their babies got interchanged and demanded DNA tests as a solution to the problem.

Following their complaint, ESI Manicktala hospital authorities constituted a committee to look into the matter.

An FIR was lodged at the Manicktala Police Station by one of the complaining families, the police said.

Usha Prasad, a resident of North 24 Parganas district and another Barnali Das of Beliaghata gave births to baby girls on Friday last.

Usha was on bed no. 4, while Barnali, who was occupying bed no. 12 at the ESI Manicktala, found on Saturday night that their babies were interchanged, the police said.

The matter was taken up immediately by the attendants at the ward, but Usha's family was confused about which newborn was their daughter, they said.

The hospital authorities form a probe panel, but it failed to satisfy the Prasad family who went on to lodge a complaint with the local police station and started demanding DNA tests, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.

"We are talking to both the families and are trying to solve the problem," the officer said.
