Press Trust of India Kolkata
West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi today said strict steps should be taken against those possessing illegal arms.

Asked for his comments on the recovery of unlicenced arms and their use in recent incidents, the Governor said, "Illegal arms should be prohibited and persons carrying them should be dealt with strongly."

Tripathi was speaking on the sidelines of a programme here.

Recently, there have been reports of firing in clashes between groups of anti-social elements and also brandishing of illegal arms during a rally.

Asansol and Bidhannagar, two important towns in the state, are going for municipal elections on October three.

The Governor, however, refused to comment on whether paramilitary forces should be deployed for the civic polls, saying it was for the state government to decide as municipal election was a state subject.
