The Allahabad High Court today sought a reply from Uttar Pradesh government on a Public Interest Litigation challenging the constitution of three-member Waqf tribunals in Rampur and Lucknow districts of the state.

A division bench, comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Yashwant Varma, passed the order on the PIL of one Mohd Junaid Ajaj and fixed March 11 as the next date of hearing in the matter.

The petitioner had contended that Waqf tribunals should have only one member each since a 2013 amendment in the Waqf Act allowing for three members was repealed by the Centre last year.
