The Madhya Pradesh High Court's Indore bench today quashed the government notification which had brought 29 villages within the limits of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC).

Subsequently, the state election commission cancelled the municipal elections scheduled for November 28.

A division bench of Justices P K Jaiswal and Prakash Shrivastava struck down a state government notification which included 29 villages within the IMC limit.

"The HC set aside the state government's March 4 notification by virtue of which 29 villages of 23 village panchayats were incorporated in the municipal limits," said advocate Anil Trivedi who had filed a public interest litigation arguing that the notification was illegal.

Advocate General R D Jain contended that the court should not interfere as the date of the election had been announced but the judges noted that the PIL was filed prior to that.
