Five inmates of the Jalaun district jail were injured when an LPG gas pipe caught fire in the prison kitchen, officials said.

The inmates, who have been undergoing treatment at the district hospital, alleged that around 20 prisoners were forced to prepare food in the kitchen yesterday when the incident took place.

Though 15 of them made a safe exit, five were seriously injured, they said.

Jail superintendent Anil Sudhakar, however, rejected the allegations that inmates were forced to prepare food and said that they were injured while trying to douse the flames.

District Magistrate Ram Ganesh said an inquiry would be conducted and its report would be handed over to the government for further action.
