An assistant jail superintendent and a warden were arrested today by the Lokayukta Police near here on the charge of accepting bribe for favour.

Assistant Jail Superintendent Manoj Mishra (36) and Bharat Verma (46) were arrested after a complaint by driver Kalamuddin, an inspector of the Lokayukta Police said.

He said Kalamuddin's son, brother and friend were incarcerated in Depalpur Jail 15 days ago in connection with a case of allegedly attempting to murder.

According to Kalamuddin, the three undertrials were harassed as well as beaten up and their relatives were not allowed to meet them, the inspector said.

He said Kamaluddin lodged a complaint alleging that ill-treatment was being meted out to three undertrials, with Mishra allegedly asking for a monthly bribe to treat them well.

The jail officer allegedly told Kamaluddin that if he paid a bribe, the three prisoners would not be asked to do labour and would be allowed to cook food of their choice inside the jail, the inspector said.

Acting on the complaint, the Lokayukta Police laid a trap and arrested jail warden Bharat Verma accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from Kamaluddin at a tea shop and arrested him in Depalpur. Later, Assistant Jail Superintendent Manoj Mishra too was arrested, he said.

The two have been booked under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and further investigations are on in the case, he said.
