Under the tutelage of Koevermans, India defeated formidable Cameroon to lift the Nehru Cup for the third time in a row, last night in New Delhi.

Current U-19 coach of Qatar team, Buuren, who has played alongside the Indian coach in FC Groningen in mid eighties, said the 52-year-old Koevermans is a thorough gentleman.

"You will find lot of good coaches in Holland. But what's important is that you must have honest people who can show you the way. Both Baan and Koevermans are genuinely good human beings," said van Buuren.

"Both these coaches are the right choice for Indian football," he added. India beat a strong Cameroon side 5-4 on penalties for their hat-trick of titles. The hosts defended the title, which they won in 2007 and 2009 under Bob Houghton.

Despite beating a team, 109 slots above them, 168th ranked India won't get any ranking points as the tournament was not held on FIFA dates.

Koevermans ended his professional career in 1990. After that he became a football manager, who worked for NEC Nijmegen, RBC Roosendaal and MVV Maastricht. The Dutch took over as India's coach in July this year after he was hand-picked by Baan, Technical Director of Indian football.

Soon after taking over, Koevermans completely changed the style and approach of the national team. He introduced possession football and discarded his predecessor's philosophy of long-ball play.

"As everybody knows, Dutch football is known for its 'Total Football'. We grew up following the great Rinus Michels' Ajax Amsterdam and then played our football in a similar set up," he added.

"Moreover, football is a game which is played on the ground and not in the air. I think, the style suits best for the Indian team. Both Baan and Koevermans are on the right track," Buuren explained.
