A Konkani study chair and
research centre would be opened at the Mangalore University here on June 12, Roy Castellino, president of Karnataka Konkani sahithya academy, said here today.
Addressing reporters here, he said the State higher education Minister R V Deshpande would inaugurate the study chair at the university college campus.

The state government had granted Rs 2 crore in the last budget to the academy for the development of the language.
Castelino said the university would look after the activities of the chair, while the academy and other Konkani organizations including the World Konkani Centre would extend full support to meet the aspirations of the Konkani-speaking community.
World Konkani Centre president Basti Vaman Shenoy, who was also present, said the chair would help Konkani literature and art to get a wider audience. He also said the chair could hold inter-disciplinary and multi-lingual research in various aspects of the language and pave way for documentation of the culture and art forms of the community.
