Timely intervention by Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta saved the life of a labourer working at a sweets shop who was locked inside as the local authorities sealed the premises and prepared for demolition in Chatha area of Jammu yesterday.

The Tehsildar of the area sealed several shops allegedly constructed illegally on government land and deployed heavy machinery to dismantle these shops despite resistance by the shopkeepers.

"The Tehsildar behaved in such a manner that there is no one above him in the department. He called heavy machinery to dismantle all the shops without serving any prior notice to them, the shops have been there for the past 40 years," Kavinder Gupta said.

He said that the issue was brought to his notice and he along with senior officials rushed to the spot.

He said the Tehsildar, in a hurry to dismantle the shops sealed them without serving them a prior notice, due to which a casual labourer was locked inside a sweets shop.

The Speaker in the presence of senior officials rescued the labourer and ordered an inquiry into the matter.

"With the timely intervention of the Speaker, the life of a casual labourer was saved", Pawan Kumar, a shopkeeper said.
