Maid tortured, NRI woman held

In yet another case of torture of domestic help, a 30-year-old maid was allegedly beaten with hot iron rods and dogs were let loose on her by her NRI employer, who has been arrested.

Umarwati (30) was employed by 45-year-old NRI Arti Jain, residing in Mayur Vihar Phase-1, four months ago as a domestic help through a placement agency, police said.

US-based Jain came to the capital to get her ailing mother treated.

The victim reportedly told police that Jain used to beat her up when she asked for money and also inflict injuries on her with hot iron rods and let dogs loose on her.
 

According to police, the maid called police yesterday after which a team of officials went to the house and rescued Umarwati, who was kept in a confinement.

Police have registered a case against Jain under relevant sections of the IPC.

The role of the placement agency through which Umarwati was employed is also being investigated, police said.

There had been a spate of cases in recent days here of torture of domestic help by affluent families, including BSP MP Dhananjay Singh and his wife who have been arrested.
