A local court today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for abetment of suicide after his wife ended her life over dowry harassment.
District and sessions judge RN Bharti also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Mahavir for allegedly forcing his wife, Santosh, to commit suicide in 2010.
Sources said that the body of Santosh was recovered in Gurgaon Sector 55 with her father alleging that the girl's in-laws, including her husband, had kept harassing her for dowry, forcing her to take the extreme step.
While a case in the matter was lodged against Mahavir along with his parents and his brother, the latter were cleared of the charges by court which, however, ruled that Mahavir was responsible for his wife having committed suicide.
