A court here today sentenced a hosiery mill worker to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl at the residence of his friend at Tirupur in the district last year.
The prosecution case was that Saravanan, estranged from his wife, befriended the 17-year-old co-worker last year and later promised to marry her.
On June 24, 2016, he called her over phone and asked her to meet him at the bus stand at Gobichettipalayam town. From there he forcibly took her to his friend's house in Tirupur on his motorcycle after threatening her, tied a thali around her neck and 'married' her.

He then sexually assaulted her for three days.
Meanwhile the girl's parents filed a complaint with police who after investigation located Saravanan and the girl and arrested him.
The girl was sent for a medical test, which confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.
District Mahila court judge N Thirunavukkarasu, before whom the case came up today, sentenced Saravanan to life imprisonment for sexually assaulting the minor girl.
The judge also sentenced him to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping the girl and two years RI for marrying a minor girl.
The judge said all the sentences would run concurrently.
