A 28-year-old garage mechanic was stabbed to death by a person for denying him 'khaini' (tobacco) at Turiabeda in the outskirts of the steel city here, police today said.

Inspector-cum-Officer-in-charge of M G M police station, Anuj Kumar said the incident took place when Vinod Mahato, the mechanic went out to consume liquor last night and was joined by a person from the same village.

The man demanded 'khaini' from Mahato, which he did not have on him. This led to a loud tiff between the two and the man in a fit of rage stabbed Mahato on the stomach and grievously injured him.

Mahato made an abortive attempt to escape but fell down on the road near the spot and died, Kumar said.

His body was found by police this morning, the police officer said adding a hunt has been launched to apprehend the culprit, who is absconding.
