Contractual workers under National Health Mission in Punjab today took up a novel form of protest by polishing shoes in front of Civil Hospital here demanding regularisation of their job.

Alleging that the government was not paying heed to their demands of regularisation of their job and equal pay for equal work, the health workers have been on strike since March 16.

"Today we polished shoes in protest. Earlier we protested by selling vegetables but in vain," Brajesh Kumar, president of National Health Mission said today.

The government has the funds to increase the salary of Ministers, MLAs, and others but doesn't have the time to even look towards the contractual employees of NHM," Kumar alleged.

"While a regularly employed nurse gets a salary of Rs 35,000-40,000, a contractual nurse under NHM gets only Rs 11,000-12,000," he said, adding "But a contractual employee works more than a regular staff and his is the truth.
