Director General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Lieutenant General Vinod Vashisht today said that although NCC cadets were not trained to assist in situations like flood, they would provide help in disaster management whenever there was a need.

"NCC cadets are not being trained to assist in situations like flood. But they will certainly help in disaster management," Vashisht told reporters in response to a query.

Describing the NCC as a "different" organisation, he said, "We will not come in the forefront to assist in disaster management, but serve from behind."

According to Vashisht, who joined as the DG in December last year, presently there are 13,80,000 NCC cadets across the country, who are studying in 16,886 schools and colleges.

More than 8,000 schools and colleges have also sought to join the NCC, he said adding that permission would soon be granted to them.

"The NCC plays a vital role in character building, discipline, leadership qualities, national integrity and patriotism among the students," he said.

Vashisht arrived here today for a three-day tour of Madhya Pradesh, during which he will also visit Sagar and Jabalpur to interact with NCC cadets.
