One injured in mob fury

A youth was injured during a protest in the city today by Dalit organisations against alleged derogatory remarks shown by a private TV channel.

26-year-old Neeraj Sharma of the Fatehgarh locality was seriously injured after a mob armed with with sharp-edged weapons assaulted him at a mobile phone shop at Sutehri Road, police said.

The mob also resorted to vandalism and smashed window panes of the shop, while others made shop owners to down shutters in the Bus Stand, Jalandhar Road, Railway Road and Sutehri Road areas and force a bandh in the city, they said.

District authorities, however, claimed that law and order situation in the city was under control and investigation into the incident was on.
 

Meanwhile, Phagwara Police registered a case against the private TV channel on charges of deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs (Section 295-A of IPC).

Amarjit Singh, a resident of Khera village in Phagwara, had lodged a complaint with the police against the TV channel.
