A crude bomb explosion killed a pillion-rider and injured his accomplice while they were trying to hit a police checkpost in the Egyptian capital here today, local media reported.

The explosion took place on the ring road, near Al-Waraq district of the Egyptian capital.

The motorbike's rider tried to throw the bomb targeting a police checkpoint, when it exploded killing him and injuring his aide, a local media quoted a security source as saying.

The injured was later arrested.

Militant attacks targeting the police and military has increased since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last year.

Over 500 security personnel have been reportedly killed in these attacks.

A major terror attack left at least 30 Egyptian soldiers dead in the restive North Sinai province last month.
