A PIL seeking to direct officials of police stations in Tamil Nadu not to issue "Community Service Register" (complaint register) to complainants and instead register FIR as per the 2013 Supreme Court direction was filed in Madras High Court bench here.

Justice V Ramasubramanian and Justice V M Velumani ordered issue of notice to the Home Secretary and the Director General of Police on the petition filed by S Santhanam Rajeshkumar, a lawyer.

The petitioner said that as per the Criminal Procedure Code, Station House officers of police stations should first register FIR on complaints given by an aggrieved person and should follow it up with investigation.

Registering the FIR after getting a complaint from the aggrieved party was a mandatory provision. The apex court had also issued directions in this regard. "But they were not followed in Tamil Nadu, the petitioner contended.
