A police officer was today caught red-handed while he was allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 3,000 from an acquaintance of a rape victim near here, Lokayukta police said.

Assistant sub-inspector Natwarsingh Nayak, posted at Badhgonda police station, had demanded bribe from the complainant for collecting necessary evidences and "strengthening" the case of a rape victim before producing it before the court.

The complainant, a family acquaintance of the victim, was pursuing the case against alleged rapist Prakash (20), a Lokayukta police inspector said.

He said after receiving the complaint, a Lokayukta police team laid a trap and Nayak was nabbed as he was taking Rs 3,000 as bribe from the complainant at Badhgonda police station premises, nearly 40 kms from district headquarters.
