Puducherry Lt Governor Virendra Kataria today made a surprise visit to the Central Prison at Kalapet, some 20 km from here, and held discussions with the jail authorities on various security aspects.
Kataria, accompanied by DIG Shukla, directed jail authorities to ensure that the 'jammer' on the premises of the central prison, which was now defunct, was made functional so that calls made on cell phones from inside would be blocked.
His visit comes against the backdrop of political parties and merchants alleging that most crimes including extortion threats were given by inmates from the prison to their contacts outside.
