Repair work of the road bridge over Farakka Barrage across River Ganga will be taken up within a fortnight as it is not in a good condition, West Bengal Transport Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Tuesday.

The crucial road bridge over the 2240 metre-long barrage is on National Highway 34, which connects south Bengal and other southern parts of the country with the north-east.

"Condition of the road bridge over the Farakka barrage is not good," Adhikari said.

Repair work of the bridge will begin in the first week of October and will take approximately six months, he said.

A portion of the arterial Majerhat bridge in south Kolkata collapsed on September four leading to the death of three persons and long-term disruption of traffic movement in vast parts of south-western Kolkata and South 24 Parganas district.

The Majerhat bridge will be pulled down and reconstructed, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said last week.

During the repair of Farakka bridge, there will be certain restrictions and diversion of vehicles during the work, the minister said.

Diversion of double and multi-axle goods vehicles will be in place from the middle of November owing to the repair and relaying of road surface.

Passenger bus services between Kolkata and other parts of south Bengal and different districts of North Bengal will not be affected owing to the work, West Bengal Transport Corporation managing director N S Nigam said.
