Unable to celebrate birthdays or wedding anniversaries because of the strenuous nature of their job, UT Chandigarh cops have now reason to smile as they can avail "rest" on these days.

UT Chandigarh Police IG RP Upadhyaya has decided that all police personnel of Chandigarh Police will be given an opportunity to be with their family and loved ones on their own birthdays and wedding anniversaries by ensuring them duty rest on these days.

"The nature of duty of police personnel is inherently stressful. They are further compounded by long hours of duty, working on weekends and holidays, inadequate housing and frequent changes in duty timings. As a result, most police personnel miss out on the milestone events in their personal lives such as birthdays and wedding anniversaries," a press release issued by Chandigarh police said.

However, cops who are unmarried, widowed, divorced may choose to avail any alternative personal event for availing rest in lieu of wedding anniversary.

The controlling authorities will ensure that police personnel are given duty rest on the days chosen by the staff under their command and control, it said.

It was clarified that such duty rest shall be within entitlement of leave kind due and does not create any new entitlement, it further said.

Birth dates are available on record in the Personnel Information System (PIS) while a proforma for intimating the date of marriage anniversary or alternative event to be availed will be available, it said, adding, cops have been asked to fill out the same.
