Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) and city Police will organise a half marathon here in January next year.

"The RMC and Rajkot city police have decided to organise a half marathon in January 24, 2016," RMC commissioner Vijay Nehra said here today.

The aim of hosting the event is to bring the people of the city together and to create awareness among them about traffic and cleanliness, Nehra said.

"The event has been divided in six categories -- half marathon (21 km), Dream Run (10km), Fun Run (3-5km), Veteran Run (2.5km), Special run for physically handicapped (1 km) and team event," Nehra said, adding the corporation has decided to have prize money for each category.

The RMC has also launched a website for online registration and to obtain further details, he said.

Rajkot Police commissioner Mohan Jha expressed hope that large number of participants including foreigners would take part in the event.

"I am confident that nearly 30,000 to 40,000 participants would take part and also confident that runners from foreign countries would also take part," Jha said.

The organising committee has made the route to cover the important places in the marathon route, he said.
