SAD flays Cong on setting up of memorials

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today asked Congress to stop "communalising" the issue of setting up of Sikh memorials in New Delhi and Amritsar.

"Congress should actually introspect and search its conscience on its role in the tragedy of Punjab and then choose an appropriate site to offer collective apology to the nation, the Punjabis and the Sikhs," SAD general secretary and spokesperson Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal said here.

Referring to PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa's criticism of memorials marking the killing of Sikhs both in Delhi and Punjab, Grewal re-iterated his party's views that Congress should collectively offer apologies and prayers at the memorials and said the party should stop communalising the issue.

"Congress is against peace and communal harmony not only in Punjab, but in the entire country. They are just unnerved now by the atmosphere brotherhood, amity and peace ushered in by the SAD-BJP government.

"Do they have any moral right to speak about memorials at places which they ravaged through brutal acts? It is like a murderer telling the victim's family not to build a memorial for the deceased," Grewal added.
