Emmy Awards had many firsts in winners such as Lena Waithe, Sterling K Brown and Riz Ahmed but producer-screenwriter Shonda Rhimes says it is embarrassing that people still have to note such moments.

Rhimes, who has created some of the best TV hits in shows such as "Grey's Anatomy", "Scandal" and "How To Get Away With Murder", feels TV industry should not think that it has made enough progress.

"It's embarrassing, frankly," she said of the Emmys to Vanity Fair.

"To me, it feels embarrassing that we are still in a place in which we still have to note these moments. I'm hoping that it's not a trend. I'm hoping that people don't feel satisfied because they saw a lot of people win, and then think that we're done," she said.

Emmy Awards were hailed for recognising diversity while recognising the best in television last Sunday.

"Master of None" star Lena Waithe became the first black woman to win a comedy writing award at Sunday's Emmys, "This Is Us" star Brown became the first black actor to win the Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series and Riz Ahmed became the first Asian and Muslim to win the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role in "Night Off".
