Six persons have been arrested in connection with illegal sand mining at Pavoor, Uliyakudru Island on the Netravati here today, police said.
A team of officials led by the Mangaluru taluk Tahsildar Mohan Kumar and Mangaluru rural police raided the illegal sand mining spots of Pavoor, based on a tip-off, and seized 25 sand laden boats.
Six persons engaged in mining have been arrested and two lorries, gas cylinders and sand digging equipments had also been seized, the Tashildar told reporters, adding, several people engaged in sand mining managed to escape on seeing the raid team, he said.
The district administration noted that the island and its surroundings came under Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) - I category, and that permission was not accorded for sand extraction within the limits.
