Elections to the Zilla Parishads of Palghar and Thane district are likely to be announced either tomorrow or by Friday, official sources said here today.

A district revenue department source who is associated with the election process told PTI said that a review meeting has been convened tomorrow at the state headquarters after which a formal announcement would be made.

The model code of conduct would come into effect with immediate effect after elections are announced, he said.

Elections to the Zilla Parishad elections of both the districts were necessited after the undivided district of Thane was bifurcated into two new districts, namely Thane and Palghar on August this year.

As per regulations, it is mandatory to form Zilla Parishads by the end January 2015 and hence elections are likely to be held either in the second or third week of the next month, sources said.

The officer also said that reservations for various categories of seats have already been drawn up and district authorities are all set to conduct elections.

In a related development, Deputy District Election Officer Madhavi Sardeshmukh who saw through both the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the district has been named as the nodal officer for the Zilla Parishad elections, official sources said.

The Palghar Zilla Parishad would have a total of 57 members of which Talasari would have five, and others would be Dahanu (12), Vikramgadh (5), Jawhar (5), Mokhada (3), Wada (6), Palghar (17) and Vasai (4).

The Thane district Zilla Parishad has a total of 57 members and the taluka wise break-up happens to be Shahapur (12), Murbad (8), Kalyan (13), Bhiwandi (17) and Ambernath (5).
