Three persons were killed and eight injured in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu as widespread rains continued here, police said today.

In Coimbatore, one person was killed and eight injured today when a compound wall of an old textile mill at Peelamedu collapsed.

The wall was wet as the city had been receiving showers for the past three days and suddenly it caved in on the people and vehicles parked nearby, they said.

Adding to the panic, an electric post near the wall also fell, resulting in sparks and smoke emanating from the snapped wire, they added.

Senior police and fire and rescue department officials rushed to the spot.

The body of one Mani was pulled out from the debris and sent for post-mortem. The injured were taken to Government hospital, they said. A large number of vehicles parked near the wall were also damaged.

In Pudukottai, a woman and her son died when the tiled roof of their house, which got soaked due to incessant rain, collapsed at Sengipatti.

Police said the 50-year-old woman and her son (28), who were farm workers, were killed as the roof of the decades-old house caved in, in the early hours and crushed them.

Rain lashed Chennai this morning, leading to inundation of low-lying areas. Vehicular movement in some parts of the city was slowed down following the rain.

Many other parts of the state including Theni, Nilgiris, Pudukottai and Tiruchirappalli, received spells of rain, officials said.

Rain or thundershowers would occur at most places over Tamil Nadu in the next 24 hours beginning 0830 hrs, they added.
