Tibetan Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay today stressed on the importance of journalism in the society, saying it creates awareness among the public.
"Journalism is an important media and has made public awareness and social messages reach the masses," he said, at the inauguration of three-day Global Festival of Journalism held at Marwah Studio organised by International Journalism Centre on eve of International Journalism Day.
Sangay also hailed India as a country having different cultures where Mahatma Gandhi preached non-violence and respect for all religions.
"India is huge country having different cultures and its unity attracts all over the world. It is country of Mahatama Gandhi who preached non violence and respect for all religions," the Tibetan Prime Minister said.
Former Governor Bhishm Narayan Singh, who was also present on the occasion, said journalism can create a revolution in the society.
"For the new generation, it is necessary to understand the impact of journalism. It can create a revolution in society. Through honest and dedicated writing, journalists can take forward the country to new heights of societal changes for speedier development," he said.
In this respect Singh recalled a saying "Jahan pahunche na ravi, vahan pahunche kavi (where the sun doesn't reach, poets reach)", which he said, perfectly fits for journalists.
The three-day festival began with the guests paying tribute to cartoonist R K Laxman.
A book 'Reel World' written by Laxman's brother, Ram Chandran was released on the occasion.
On the festival's first day, a painting exhibition, bulletin and poster release, workshop on journalism and cultural programmes were organised.
Sandeep Marwah, Chairman, Marwah Studios conferred life membership of International Journalism Centre to the Tibetan Prime Minister.
Speakers from over 30 countries, including Myanmar, Argentina, South Africa, Columbia, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Russia participated in the festival.
