A 45-year-old woman was allegedly killed today after a tiger attacked her in Manora forest, nearly 12 kms from here, forest officials said.

The deceased, identified as Zubeida Sheikh, a native of Manora village had gone to collect fire-wood in the forest along with some other villagers this morning, when a tiger attacked, killing her on the spot, Range Forest Officer (Ballarpur Range), M M Morey said.

Soon after the attack, villagers ran from the spot and alerted others, who later went to the spot in groups.

The tiger had dragged the body far inside the forest, Morey said, adding the body was later recovered by forest officials.

While confirming tiger attack on the basis of eyewitness account, Morey said officials could not trace pug-marks as they were erased or smeared after people gathered at the spot.

Morey said an ex-gratia of Rs 25,000 was paid to the kin of the deceased, while remaining compensation amount would be paid once official formalities are completed.

The officer informed that a sum of Rs 5 lakh is given as compensation in case of death by a wildlife animal.
