An eight-year-old tigress, which strayed into a village near the reserved forests under Kurichiyad range of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (WWS), was captured today, forest officials said.

The tigress, sighted by locals on a village road in the morning yesterday, had entered a private coffee plantation, WWS warden P Dhaneshkumar said.

On being informed about sighting of the big cat, forest officials rushed to the spot last evening and set up a cage with a live bait to trap the animal. Six surveillance cameras were also installed to monitor the movement of the tigress, he said.

The tigress was trapped early this morning and brought to the premises of Wildlife Warden's office at Sultan Battery, Dhaneshkumar said.

Forest officials said the tigress would be transported to Neyyar wildlife sanctuary for treatment as it has a wound on the right lower abdomen, heavily infested by maggots and flies.
