A couple from Gujarat was today killed by a wild elephant while on a forest trekking at Gavi in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district, police said.

The victims were identified as Upendra Rawal (52) and Jgrathy Rawal (50) who met with the tragic end while trekking in a plantation of the Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC) deep in the Gavi forests.

According to a KFDC official, the elephant that crossed the path of the trekking couple attacked them before they could escape overcoming the shock.

The man was beaten to death by the trunk and the woman stomped over by the irate elephant. A tourist guide accompanying them managed to flee.

The trekking was arranged by a tour operator from Kumali in nearby Idukki district in tie-up with an Ahemadabad-based hotel.
