A 27-year-old woman from Gujarat, part of a tourist group, was stomped to death by a captive elephant at Iruttukanam near Munnar in Kerala's Idukki district today.

The deceased, Dipali from Nandod in Narmada district of Gujarat, met with the tragic end when she was trying to take pictures of the pachyderm at a private elephant ride park, police said.

The elephant first struck her with its trunk and when she fell, stomped over her body, killing her on the spot.

The body has been kept in a nearby government hospital and would be flown home tomorrow, police said.

Dipali was part of a 14-member tourist group that has come here from Gujarat to visit the hill station and the surrounding areas.
