Normal trading and allied commercial activities were affected in Kerala today as hundreds of shopkeepers downed shutters to protest alleged harassment by Sales Tax officials.

The one-day protest call was given by the Kerala Vyapari Vyavaysai Ekopana Samiti, the largest traders' body in the state which has as its members big and small businessmen ranging from wholesalers to street-side kiosk owners.

Agitating traders took out marches in major towns across the state highlighting their demand.

Samiti Leader Nasurudeen said in Kozhikode that the agitation would be stepped up in the coming days if the Government turned a deaf ear to their demand.
