Two ferries stuck in the Brahmaputra were today swept downstream by the surging waters of the river and reached Pandu Ghat near here.

A ferry, 'Kamashwar', with passengers on board, was stranded midstream of the river in high spate due to engine failure and another ferry 'Mahalakshmi' was sent to rescue the passengers in the first, official sources said.

However, 'Mahalakshmi' also developed engine failure and was stranded in the river, the sources said.

Both the ferries were then swept downstream by the currents and reached Pandu Ghat.

A rescue team managed to bring the ferries to the river bank and evacuate the passengers safely, sources added.
