In a move aimed at promoting gender equality, University Grants Commission has directed all universities to include mother's name in all academic testimonials.
The body, governing higher educational institutes, has asked the universities for the inclusion of mother's name in all application, forms, degrees certificates issued by university and affiliated colleges.
Officials in the commission said the move will help children of divorced or separated mothers and also help sort out several legal issues.
Earlier, in 1998 UGC had issued a similar order but it was not being strictly followed.
