Undertrial attacked soon after admission in Tihar

An undertrial was attacked in Tihar jail soon after his admission into the high security prison by five inmates, one of whom had an old enmity with him.

Ravinder (35), an accused in several criminal cases, and brought to the jail around 8.30 pm yesterday, was attacked even as his prison admission documents were being prepared, jail officials said.

The attackers, however, began inflicting injuries on themselves when they realised that a head guard was witness to the attack, in order to claim that they too were assaulted.

The head guard of of ward nine, where the attack took place, informed the jail officials, who came to Ravinder's rescue.
 

The injured were given treatment at the jail clinic and were later shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

On interrogation of the attackers, it was learnt that Ravinder had an old enmity with one of the attackers Arvind, a senior police officer said, adding that the attackers included three undertrials and two convicts.

Handmade sharp-edged weapons and two blades were recovered from the spot, jail officials said.

Earlier today, two convicts including a lifer died under mysterious circumstances in the jail following which an official was suspended and a magisterial probe ordered.

A 40-year-old undertrial, Ajay, was stabbed to death on Monday afternoon allegedly by three other inmates over personal enmity.
