Declaring his resolve to work for the defeat of Congress in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, MDMK chief Vaiko today said his party was in touch with BJP for possible alliance.

"Our target is very clear. Congress should not assume office at the Centre for a third term," Vaiko, who had been highly critical of the UPA over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue and attacks on Indian fishermen by the Lankan Navy, told reporters here.

Vaiko, a former ally of both NDA and UPA, indicated that his party was warming up for an alliance with BJP.

"I had met BJP Chief Rajnath Singh in New Delhi and at that time (BJP spokesperson) Muralidhar Rao (Tamil Nadu unit President) Pon. Radhakrishan were there along with him. I had known Rajnath Singh for a long time. I did not have any official talks (on forming an alliance with BJP) but had only preparatory talks," he said.

Responding to a query, he said his party's general council would meet on February 4 at Chennai to discuss the party's stand for the Lok Sabha polls.
