A 45-year-old village head and his nephew were today shot dead by 2-3 assailants over polls-related rivalry in Kakrahi Bazar here, police said.

Nandlal Yadav, head (Pradhan) of Hiranandpur village, and his nephew Satish (24) were passing through the market this afternoon when two-three assialants fired at them and escaped, they said.

While Yadav died on the spot, Satish succumbed to injuries on the way to a hospital in Varanasi, police said.

Infuriated over the murder, the locals attacked the house of the alleged accused and police rushed to pacify them, they said.

A case has been lodged and investigations are on, police said.

In 2007, Yadav's brother, the then village head, was also shot dead, police said.
