Former Army Chief Gen V K Singh today condemned the acts of violence against the people from the Northeastern states, saying this "deep-rooted malice" in the society has to be addressed immediately.
"It is bizarre...These incidents are absolutely outrageous. This is a deep-rooted malice in our society and we have to stop behaving like ostriches and address the problem," he said in a statement.
Gen Singh, who has served as the Eastern Army Commander, said, "Unless we as a people learn to understand and respect each other, these absolutely shameful incidents will continue to happen."

"We wanted people to understand the complex realities of the region. People not just outside the Northeast, but also within the region, have to understand and know each other," he said.
Singh extended condolences to the family of Nido Tania and said the authorities must realise the magnitude of the problem and rise above petty politics.
