West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) is being deferred to May 5 and 6 to pave the way for holding elections to Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on April 18 and to 93 civic bodies across the state on April 25.
Elections to KMC and the 93 municipalities are billed as the biggest polls before the Assembly elections in 2016.
The WBJEE would be held on May 5 and 6 instead of April 18 and 19 fixed earlier, Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told PTI.
"With the change of date of the JEE, now there is no difficulty in holding the KMC poll on April 18," state Election Commissioner Sushanta Ranjan Upadhaya said.
The SEC earlier wrote to the state government to think of a revised date for the KMC polls, if necessary, because of the WBJEE scheduled on April 18.
The SEC has no reservation in holding polls on April 25 to 93 municipalities as suggested by the state government.
"Since we have not commented on that (holding polls on April 25), it is obvious that there is no difficulty (on the part of SEC)", Upadhaya said told PTI.
