A 29-year-old tea garden worker was killed today by wild elephants when he along with other villagers went to chase the tuskers away from damaging their houses at Birpara tea garden in Alipurduar district.

Narayan Kharia died when the elephant lifted him by its trunk and threw him on the ground this morning at Biruline workers' slum, Wildlife warden Seema Chowdhury said.

"Another person was injured when the elephants attacked him," she said, adding, he was admitted to Alipurduar district hospital.

Two elephants attacked the slum in search of food and went on the rampage when the locals tried to chase them away, Chowdhury said.

Local residents later blocked the NH-31 demanding compensation for the deceased and the injured.
